Seiichi Furuya – Berlin-Ost/West-Berlin 1985-87

Since the late 1980s the Graz-based Japanese photographer Seiichi Furuya has been pursuing a visual labor of memory under the title Mémoires. In numerous artist’s books and exhibitions Furuya combines portraits of his family with pictures from their travels and places of residence, and these images are presented in ever changing constellations and contexts.

Especially the pictures from East Berlin, where Furuya lived from 1985 to 1987, are an exceptional document, featuring a vivid interplay between the private and public, between personal vision and documentary detachment.

In a new digital projection, Furuya shows more than 600 images in a random sequence. 35 years after reunification, Furuya’s images appear as casual as they are precise and contemporary.

The opening reception will be held on 28 February 2025, 6-9 pm.

Brian O’Doherty

The new exhibition by Irish-American artist and author Brian O’Doherty (1928-2022) centres on his conceptual drawings from the 1960s and 1970s. In addition to their intellectual rigour, they are characterised above all by the fact that they undermine this at the perceptual level: through language, irony, aesthetic stimuli and physical-sensual experiences.
